In a field one summer's day a Grasshopper is hopping and singing. An Ant is passing by and taking some corn to the nest.
"Why not come and chat with me," says the Grasshopper, "instead of toiling and moiling in that way?"
"I am helping to lay up food for the winter," says the Ant, "and recommend you to do the same."
"Winter? We have so much time before it" says the Grasshopper; "We have got plenty of food at present." But the Ant goes on its way.
When the winter comes the Grasshopper has no food and finds itself dying of hunger. And the Ant lives in its house and has a lot of food.
Then the Grasshopper knew: It is best to prepare for days of need.
